Hillhead impress against clinical Clydesdale

In their opening encounter of this year's National League, Hillhead faced much fancied rivals Clydesdale at G.H.K on a cold and dull morning.

The hockey from the outset lit up the morning with Clydesdale totally dominant in the opening exchanges, with flowing hockey causing Hillhead all sorts of problems. Hillhead welcoming five new players to their squad took time to settle. Clydesdale took full advantage of this early disharmony as they took a deserved lead after confusion in the Hillhead defence left keeper Westwood with no chance. Hillhead settled into the game after this early setback and gradually began to compete more with their impressive opponents. They were, however, to face a setback late in the half with Clydesdale adding a second goal after a beautiful passing move.

Halftime HIllhead 0 - 2 Clydesdale

Hillhead took to the field in the second half looking for the more of the good attitude and effort applied in a difficult first half. As it happened, they gave every ounce of energy they had creating ten times as many chances in the second half as they did in the first. Like a side transformed, they grew with confidence and started linking up more successfully than in the first half. Chances came and went, until late in the match with John Reid sealing a good performance with a penalty corner strike. Six minutes to go, game on! Hillhead with nothing to lose pushed for the win, with four players posted high in search an equaliser. Unfortunately this allowed Clydesdale to counter attack and score a third and final goal, sealing the three points in an enthralling encounter. No points, but plenty of positives for a squad of players that had never met let alone played together.

Thanks to Ronnie Meikle for umpiring and all the support.

Fulltime Hillhead 1 - 3 Clydesdale

Investec Hillhead's Juniors on international Duty

Whilst the season comes to an end for most of us, spare a thought for James Ross and John Reid who continue to train hard as part of their involvement with Scotland Under 18s and Under 16s respectively.

James earned his first cap for Scotland Under 18s on Friday, going down 5-1 to the Welsh in Wales. Playing in various positions up the left flank in the second test, James enjoyed being part of an improved performance as the team once more lost, this time by three goals to one. In the final match James played the entire match give or take a minute or so, and contributed to the team's best performance as they salvaged some pride with a hard fought 1-1 draw.

Next season promises to be a big one for James at club level as he continues to improve and impress. A place in the first XI is surely his to lose.

John Reid playing his second season at Under 16s again visited Dutch club HDM for their annual invitational tounament. Scotland unlike their opponents fielded an under 16 side whilst the other club sides and Switzerland fielded under 18 sides. Scotland finished a credible sixth with three successive wins against Dutch Side Almere, Aberdeen Grammar School and most notably Switzerland Under 18s. John scored in a friendly against hosts HDM and in the tournament against Ring Pass. He played the majority of the tournament at centre forward.

Next season should see John establish himself in the first XI which will further his progress at international level.

WELL DONE BOYS, HILLHEAD ARE VERY PROUD OF YOUR SUCCESSES

P.S. - Hillhead are also delighted to hear that Aiden Docherty now at Inverleith continues to dazzle, capped for a second year at under 18 level. A credit to Hillhead and I am sure Inverleith.

Hillhead lose to Clydesdale in keenly fought encounter

After a tightly contested first 40 minutes and with the teams level at 1-1, Hillhead tired in the final third conceding three late goals, losing the match 4-1. All in all, fantasic individual performances by all involved. Some work to be done in terms of team play, but no worries in terms of technical ability of the players. A credit to the club and lots of players that will go all the way up the teams if they work hard.

Team:
